The verdict

Choose Porto if you want the coast within reach, 52 beaches nearby, and a denser run of museums, with mild summers topping out around 25°C.

Choose Seville if you want heat and dry sky, with more nightclubs and drinking places near the centre, and are content with a city trip where swimming is not part of the plan.

Where they differ

Porto has 52 beaches nearby against Seville's 2, and about twice as many museums, with 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Seville's 1. Neither has a month of sea warm enough for easy swimming; Porto's peaks at 17°C.

Seville runs warmer through the year, with daytime highs of 16-36°C against Porto's 14-25°C, and more months at 40mm of rain or less. Nights out are its stronger suit too: somewhat more places to drink and about twice as many nightclubs, most of them near the centre.

Where they are alike

Families are served about equally well. Porto has roughly three times as many tourist attractions near the centre; Seville has about three times as much park space and 2 theme parks within reach against Porto's 1.

They are also close on walkable sightseeing and eating out: both hold a similar number of notable places within walking distance of the centre, with somewhat more restaurants near Seville's centre and a somewhat wider range of kitchens in Porto.

Which traveller are you?

If the coast is the point, Porto: 52 beaches within reach against Seville's 2, though at 17°C at best the sea suits short swims rather than long afternoons in the water.

For museums and old streets, Porto again: about twice as many museums as Seville, and 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 1, even if Seville's museums sit more tightly around its centre.

For late nights and dry heat, Seville: somewhat more places to drink, about twice as many nightclubs, most of them near the centre, and summer highs of 36°C with very little summer rain.

What the numbers don't tell you

Porto's 52 beaches say more about coastline than about swimming: the sea never passes 17°C, so the water stays bracing in any month, and the reliably dry stretch is short.

The daily budget figures, €109 and €122, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than measurements of Porto or Seville. A heavily visited city can sit further from its own country's average than these two figures sit from each other, so the gap between them is no guide to what either trip costs.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Porto: 1991-2020 normals, Porto / Serra Do Pilar (2.1 km from centre). Seville: 1991-2020 normals, Sevilla / San Pablo (8.1 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Porto is at its best from June to September, when highs sit at 23-25°C and July, the driest month, sees 22mm. The sea only reaches 17°C at its warmest. Winter is the trade-off, with 181mm falling in November.

Seville suits spring and autumn. April and May bring 24-28°C with modest rain, and October is still 26°C but wetter, at 74mm. July and August reach 36°C, hard going for daytime sightseeing.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
