Where they differ
Riga's edge is largely a national one: Latvia's estimated daily budget is €132 against Sweden's €169, which shapes how long you can stay. A slightly larger share of the land around Riga is protected, though Stockholm has more park space near the centre.
Stockholm is the stronger family trip, with about three times as many attractions near the centre and two theme parks within reach against Riga's one. The sea starts at the centre rather than 12km out, and there are more beaches within reach.
Where they are alike
Weather is where they are hardest to separate. Both peak at 24°C in July and sit at 0-1°C at the coldest, with the same short warm season and long cool one. Neither sea reaches 21°C in any month.
Museums come out much the same in number, so a wet afternoon indoors works either way. Day trips are similar too: neither has a large protected hinterland, 10% of the land around Riga and 7% around Stockholm.
Which traveller are you?
Travelling with children, Stockholm is the clearer choice: about three times as many attractions near the centre, more park space within walking distance, two theme parks within reach against Riga's one, and water at the centre.
A museum-led trip works in either city, since the two hold much the same number, but Latvia's lower national daily estimate, €132 against €169, lets a Riga stay run longer for the same money.
Swimmers face a trade-off. Stockholm puts the sea at the centre and has more beaches nearby; Riga's August sea is the warmer of the two, at 19°C, though its coast sits 12km from the centre.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures are national estimates for Latvia and Sweden, price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than measurements of Riga or Stockholm. Capitals and heavily visited cities can sit far from their own country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so neither city can be called the cheaper one on this basis.
No weather station near Riga reports sunshine hours, so the figure is missing rather than low: Riga's monthly ratings rest on temperature, rainfall and sea temperature alone, and that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured. Beach counts flatter both cities: neither sea reaches 21°C in any month.
When should you go?

Riga is at its best in July and August: 24°C in July, and the sea at 19°C in August, the warmer of the two seas. Those are also its wettest months, 87mm and 78mm. June is drier at 69mm with highs of 21°C.
Stockholm opens earlier. April and May stay dry at 29mm and 34mm with highs of 11-17°C, and July matches Riga's 24°C on 60mm, less than Riga's July rain. Late autumn is wet in both, and winter barely separates them.
