The verdict

Choose Rovinj if the sea matters most: 55 beaches within reach and four months of swimmable water, in a town of 13,000 where days are shaped by the coast rather than by museums.

Choose Sarajevo if you want a walkable city with far more to see on foot, many more museums, and a wider choice of places to eat and drink after dark.

Where they differ

Rovinj has the coast: 55 beaches nearby and four months when the sea sits at 21°C or more, plus 3 theme parks within reach where Sarajevo has none.

Sarajevo is the denser city. Far more notable places sit within walking distance of the centre, it has many times as many museums, and about twice as many restaurants near the centre, with a wider range of kitchens. Evenings are broader too: many times as many places to drink and about twice as many nightclubs, most of them central.

Where they are alike

Neither city has a genuinely dry month, and both work best in summer: Rovinj reaches 29°C at its warmest, Sarajevo 28°C, with winters cooler in both, though Rovinj's are milder.

Both rate well on value for money. Open country is the weaker side of each: 2% of the land around both is protected, and each has one UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach.

Which traveller are you?

If swimming is the point of the trip, Rovinj is the only option of the two: 55 beaches nearby and four months when the sea holds 21°C or more, which Sarajevo cannot match at all.

Museum-goers and city walkers should take Sarajevo. Its notable buildings cluster within walking distance of the centre, it has many times as many museums, and evenings offer far more places to drink.

Families split the difference. Sarajevo has about three times as many attractions near the centre and much more park space; Rovinj answers with 3 theme parks within reach and safe swimming through summer.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. The dataset carries a daily budget for Rovinj, about €138, and none for Sarajevo; the value ranking rests on a different measure both cities have, so do not read it as a price.

Rovinj's coastal advantage is narrow in time: the sea reaches 21°C or more for four months, and those are the months a town of 13,000 is busiest. Sarajevo's museums, bars and attractions cluster near the centre, so staying further out gives you less than the figures suggest. Neither city gets a dry month, so a warm one can still be wet.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Rovinj: 1991-2020 normals, Trieste (63.7 km from centre). Sarajevo: 1991-2020 normals, Sarajevo-Bejelave (2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Rovinj is the better pick from June to September, with highs of 24-29°C and sea at 22-26°C. Rain is light in July at 61mm but builds through autumn, past 110mm a month, so early autumn trades warm water for grey days.

Sarajevo suits July and August, when highs reach 28°C and rain eases to 66mm. Its spring months are wetter, and January brings highs of 4°C, so winter there is for indoor days rather than walking the city.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
