The verdict

Choose Rovinj if you are travelling with children: attractions and park space sit close together near the centre, there are theme parks within reach, and a wider range of kitchens matters more to you than the sheer number of restaurants.

Choose Sorrento if you want a longer swimming season, with 5 months of sea at 21°C or more, more protected countryside for day trips, and a tighter walkable centre.

Where they differ

Rovinj is the easier of the two with children: about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre, roughly twice as much park space, and 3 theme parks within reach against Sorrento's 1. It also has about three times as many nightclubs.

Sorrento has more protected land around it, 7% against 2%, which gives day trips out of town more to aim at, and about twice as many places to drink near the centre. Its notable places also cluster more tightly within walking distance.

Where they are alike

Both sit on the water, the sea 0km from Sorrento's centre and 1km from Rovinj's, both have a long list of beaches nearby, and in both the sea peaks at 26°C in August.

Summers are hot in both, and each keeps its museums close to the centre rather than spread out. On eating, the difference is one of kind: Sorrento has more restaurants near the centre, Rovinj a wider range of kitchens.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Rovinj. Attractions sit closer together near the centre, there is more park space to spill into, and 3 theme parks are within reach against Sorrento's 1.

Heritage and day trips: Sorrento. It has somewhat more museums, 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Rovinj's 1, more protected countryside around it, and its notable places sit within walking distance of the centre.

Evenings out and eating: this one splits. Sorrento has about twice as many places to drink and more restaurants near the centre; Rovinj has about three times as many nightclubs and a broader spread of kitchens.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €138 and €155, are national estimates for Croatia and Italy, a general price level for restaurants and hotels. They are not measurements of either town, and the distance between a small coastal resort and its own country average can be wider than the distance between the two national figures.

Beach counts say how many, not how much room. Both towns are small, and the warmest, driest months are also the busiest ones. Autumn keeps the sea usable in both, but in Rovinj the rainfall is the price of it.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Rovinj: 1991-2020 normals, Trieste (63.7 km from centre). Sorrento: 1991-2020 normals, Grazzanise (53.6 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Rovinj is at its best from June to August, with highs of 27-29°C, the sea at 22-26°C and monthly rain of 61-78mm. Autumn is markedly wetter there, above 110mm a month.

Sorrento holds a longer and drier season. Its high summer is hot at 31°C and nearly rainless at 17-18mm, and September still gives 28°C with the sea at 24°C, so swimming carries on well past the peak. Late autumn is its wettest stretch, at 159mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
