The verdict

Choose Rovinj if the trip is built around swimming. It has the beaches and four months of sea above 21°C; the town itself is small, with little to do after dark.

Choose Verona if you want a city you can walk: museums, restaurants and attractions concentrated near the centre, better for families and for evenings out, with no coast to speak of.

Where they differ

Rovinj is the swimming trip: 55 beaches nearby against Verona's 2, and four months when the sea sits at 21°C or above, peaking at 26°C in August. Verona has no comparable coast.

Verona packs far more into walking distance, with many more notable places near the centre, and it suits families better: more attractions and park space close in, plus 4 theme parks within reach against Rovinj's 3. It also has more museums and a wider choice of places to eat.

Where they are alike

Neither city has an edge on year-round weather. Both get about 2,185 hours of sunshine a year, both peak in July and both turn genuinely cold in winter, so the calendar shapes a trip to either in much the same way.

Both offer a similar range of kitchens, even if Verona has about three times as many restaurants near the centre, and the two national budget estimates sit within €20 of each other.

Which traveller are you?

Swimmers and sun-seekers want Rovinj, with 55 beaches nearby and sea at 25-26°C in July and August. Verona has almost no coast, so a swimming holiday there is not on offer.

Museum-goers and city walkers want Verona, where far more notable places sit within walking distance and there are 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Rovinj's 1. Rovinj's heritage is thinner and quickly covered.

Families with children want Verona too, for the attractions and park space near the centre, and for more theme parks within reach. Rovinj offers the water and little else structured for children.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €138 and €155, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. A small coastal resort and a much-visited city can each sit well away from their country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so neither number tells you what a week in Rovinj or Verona will cost.

Rovinj's beach count sits beside a resident population of 13,000, so the summer months that make the coast work are also when it is most crowded. And its warmest sea months run into the wettest part of the year, with autumn rain heavier than Verona's.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Rovinj: 1991-2020 normals, Trieste (63.7 km from centre). Verona: 1991-2020 normals, Verona / Villafranca (11.6 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Rovinj suits high summer: the sea reaches 25-26°C in July and August, with highs near 29°C. Sea temperatures climb late, so early summer swimming is cooler than the air suggests. Autumn turns wet, with 113-125mm a month, so the swimming window closes early.

Verona is stronger in the shoulder months. May and September give highs of 24-25°C with lighter rain than Rovinj gets in autumn, and its winter is drier, 38mm in the driest month against Rovinj's 59mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
