Choose Siena if you are travelling for the historic core and the heritage around it, with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and if you want warmer afternoons, up to 31°C in July.

Choose Turin if you want a city that carries on after dinner, with many times as many restaurants and bars near the centre, more to occupy children, and more protected countryside within reach.

Where they differ

Siena's edge is heritage: one more UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach than Turin, and a smaller historic core. It is the warmer of the two, roughly 2°C above Turin in most months.

Turin eats and drinks on another scale, with far more restaurants near the centre and a wider spread of kitchens, and bars and clubs well beyond Siena's. It is also the better city with children, about three times more attractions near the centre and twice the park space, and more protected land, 6% against 3%.

Where they are alike

Both have a similar shape of year: cold winters, hot Julys, and no month drier than 40mm, so rain is a factor whenever you go. Siena runs a little warmer throughout.

Both are historic cities first, with museum holdings of comparable weight and a walkable core where the notable buildings sit close together, Turin's somewhat more numerous. Neither is a place to swim: Turin's single nearby beach has no month of sea at 21°C or more.

Which traveller are you?

If you are travelling for museums, churches and old streets, Siena is the pick: a compact centre you can cover on foot, and 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, one more than Turin has.

If dinner and the hours after it matter, Turin: many times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, plus many times as many bars and nightclubs.

Families are better served in Turin, with about three times as many attractions near the centre and twice as much park space, though neither city has a theme park within reach.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information. It is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so nothing here shows either city to be the cheaper trip. The €155 a day quoted beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of Siena or Turin, and should not be read as a trait of either.

No weather station near these cities records sunshine hours, so that figure is missing rather than low for both. The monthly picture rests on temperature and rainfall alone, which leaves one side of the weather comparison unmeasured. Turin's single nearby beach likewise does not make it a swimming destination.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Siena: 2006-2017 (rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Arezzo (45 km from centre). Turin: 1991-2020 normals, Torino / Caselle (15.4 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Siena suits April to June, with highs of 20-28°C and rain easing to 71mm at the end of that stretch. September works too, though it is wet, at 103mm.

Turin is the better choice in high summer: its July and August highs run about 2°C below Siena's, which makes the middle of the day more workable. Late summer is wetter there, 83mm against Siena's 49mm, so pack for showers. October is wetter still in Turin.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
