The verdict

Choose Strasbourg if the countryside around a city matters as much as the city: protected land close by, a theme park within reach, and sights tight enough to cover on foot.

Choose Turin if you want museum days and evenings that follow them, with far more places to drink and more attractions for families near the centre, though its surroundings are largely built up.

Where they differ

Strasbourg's strength is what lies outside it: 37% of the land around the city is protected against 6% around Turin, so days out reach real countryside. Its bars are fewer, but nearly all sit near the centre.

Turin holds about three times as many museums as Strasbourg, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 1. It also has many times as many places to drink and about three times as many nightclubs, though only about half of them are central.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination: Strasbourg has 9 beaches nearby and Turin 1, but neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more.

Elsewhere they run close. Both have warm summers and cold winters, both put a good number of notable places within walking distance of the centre, and both eat well, Turin with more restaurants near the centre, Strasbourg with a wider range of kitchens. The two national budget estimates are close, €160 and €155 a day.

Which traveller are you?

For museum days, Turin: about three times as many museums as Strasbourg, 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 1, and evenings that continue afterwards in many times as many bars.

Walkers and drivers who want country between city days should take Strasbourg, where 37% of the surrounding land is protected against 6% around Turin, and where the notable sights cluster tightly enough to walk.

Families are better served in Turin, with far more attractions near the centre and comparable park space, unless a theme park is the point: Strasbourg has 1 within reach and Turin none.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget is a national estimate of restaurant and hotel prices, not a measurement of either city. A large city can sit far from its own country's average, by more than the gap between the two national figures, so it says nothing about which trip costs more.

The sunshine figure is missing for Turin, since no nearby station records it, so that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured rather than poor, and the monthly picture there rests on temperature and rainfall alone. Warmth and dry weather also rarely coincide: Turin's warmest season runs straight into its wettest months, and Strasbourg's driest months are its coldest.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

No sunshine record

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Strasbourg: 1991-2020 normals, Strasbourg (9.1 km from centre). Turin: 1991-2020 normals, Torino / Caselle (15.4 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Turin is warmest in June and July, at 26-29°C, and its summer rain is moderate. From September the rain climbs sharply, past 110mm a month, and stays heavy through autumn, so an early trip beats a late one.

Strasbourg's summer runs 24-26°C from June to August with rain of 61-72mm, close to Turin's, but its autumn is far drier. Its driest months come in winter and early spring, under 40mm, when highs are 5-12°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
