Where they differ

Toronto packs more into a walkable centre: about twice as many notable places within walking distance as Vancouver, and its museums sit more tightly around the middle. Its water is warmer in late summer, the only sea here to reach 21°C, in August.

Vancouver is the outdoor trip: 19% of the land around it is protected against 2% around Toronto, with about twice as much park space near the centre. The sea is 1km from the centre against 5km, and 109 beaches sit nearby against 58.

Where they are alike

Both peak in July and both keep the same shape of year: warmest sea in August, mildest weather in the middle of the year. Neither has a month at 40mm of rain or less, so wet days are possible whenever you go.

Both are solid for families, with theme parks within reach, 4 near Toronto and 3 near Vancouver, and parks and attractions near the centre. Eating out is broad in both, with a similar range of kitchens.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone who wants trails, forest and water within reach of the hotel should take Vancouver: 19% of the surrounding land is protected, park space near the centre is roughly double Toronto's, and the sea is 1km away.

If the plan is eating and going out, Toronto has about twice as many restaurants near the centre and about twice as many bars and nightclubs, with most of them close in.

Families are close to a tie. Toronto has about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre and 4 theme parks within reach against 3; Vancouver answers with park space and 109 beaches against 58.

What the numbers don't tell you

The two share a value figure because it reflects a national price level, so it is identical by construction and says nothing about how one city compares with the other. No daily budget figure exists for either, so no cost comparison between them is possible here at all.

Toronto has no sunshine record from any nearby station, so that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured rather than weak; its monthly picture rests on temperature, rainfall and sea temperature. And the beach counts flatter Vancouver: 109 beaches with water topping out at 16°C is a different proposition from swimming, which only Toronto's 21°C in August supports.

Toronto's window is June to September, with highs of 22-27°C and sea reaching 21°C in August. Rain is steady rather than seasonal, at 62-85mm a month across the summer, so a wet spell can land in any of them. Winter is the sharp difference: January highs sit at 0°C.

Vancouver peaks in July and August, its driest months at 42-49mm and warm enough at 23°C for long days outdoors. In autumn and winter it turns heavy, up to 245mm, though days stay near 7°C.
