Where they differ

Marseille has many times as many restaurants near the centre, and a wider range of kitchens with them. The gap is wider after dark: many times as many bars and many times as many nightclubs, most of them close to the centre.

Monaco is the better base for getting out of town: 24% of the land around it is protected against 15% around Marseille, so more of the surrounding country is open ground rather than built up, though Marseille keeps about twice as much park space near its own centre.

Where they are alike

Both are Mediterranean in the same way: January highs of 12-13°C, no cold season to plan around, and close to 2,800 hours of sun a year in each.

Which traveller are you?

Eating and going out: Marseille. It has many times as many restaurants near the centre, a wider range of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs; Monaco has little after dark.

Swimmers who also want to walk: Monaco. The sea passes 21°C for four months and reaches 25°C in August, and notable places sit closer together, so a short stay needs no transport.

Families lean Marseille: more attractions near the centre, about twice as much park space, and 4 theme parks within reach against 3, though neither city is built mainly around children.

What the numbers don't tell you

There is no daily cost figure for Monaco in this data, so the two cannot be compared on price at all. Marseille's €160 a day stands on its own, and the missing figure should not be read as either cheap or dear.

Warm air and warm water do not arrive together. Marseille's highs run above Monaco's all summer, yet its sea stays at 21°C or more for half as long, and September stays warm in both while rain climbs to 82-84mm, so a late-summer trip can be swimmable and wet at once.

Marseille peaks earlier. May and June bring 24-28°C with 28-38mm of rain, and July is its driest month at 11mm. Its autumn is drier too: 72-76mm in October and November against Monaco's 124-138mm, so a late trip works better here.

Monaco is at its best in July and August, when highs sit at 28°C and the sea reaches 24-25°C, warmer than anything Marseille offers, with only 13-18mm of rain. June is the quieter warm alternative at 25°C.
